Once a tree's felled, the stump and roots stay behind — and a stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, a mower-breaker, and an eyesore that can sit there for years without rotting away on its own. Stump grinding solves it properly.
We use a purpose-built grinding machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump down to below ground level, usually 20-30cm deep. What's left gets covered over with the resulting wood chippings and soil, leaving the area ready to turf, plant or pave straight away.
It's a fraction of the disruption of digging a stump out by hand or machine, and it's normally done in an hour or two — most jobs are in and out the same day.

The things people usually want to know before booking a stump grind.
What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding chews the stump down to below ground level using a rotating cutting wheel, leaving the wider root system in place underground to break down naturally. Full removal digs out the stump and major roots entirely, which is far more disruptive to the surrounding ground. Grinding is quicker, less invasive, and suits the vast majority of gardens.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Typically 20-30cm below ground level, which is enough to turf, plant or lay a path over the top without the stump being in the way. If you're planning something that needs more depth, such as a new tree in the same spot, let us know and we'll grind further.
Can I replant in the same spot afterwards?
Usually, yes, once the ground chippings have settled and any remaining roots have started to break down — generally a few months. For an immediate replant in the exact same spot, it's worth letting us know in advance so we can grind a bit deeper and remove more of the surrounding root.
What happens to all the wood chippings?
We can leave them for you to use as mulch, or clear them away as part of the job — whatever's more useful to you. We'll agree it before we start.
Will grinding damage my lawn, drive or nearby paving?
Our machines are sized to the site, and we take care around anything nearby. There's inevitably some disturbance to the ground right around the stump itself, but we work carefully to avoid affecting anything beyond that.
Can you grind a stump without felling the tree first?
Stump grinding is for stumps left behind after a tree's already down — if you've still got a standing tree that needs removing, that's felling, which we're also happy to help with. Plenty of jobs are both in one visit.
