Tree felling is the complete removal of a tree — trunk, canopy and all — usually because it's dead, diseased, dangerous, or simply in the way of what you're planning to do with the space. It's one of the most common calls we get, and also one of the most misunderstood.
Most people picture felling as cutting through the base and letting the whole tree fall — and where there's room, that's exactly what open felling is. But in gardens, streets, and anywhere close to buildings, that's rarely how it actually happens. More often, we're taking a tree down piece by piece from the top, lowering each section by rope so nothing is ever dropped.
Every felling job starts with a free site visit, so we can check access, look at what's nearby, and confirm whether the tree needs council permission before anything's booked in.

Which method we use comes down to one thing: what's around the tree. We'll always recommend the safest, least disruptive option for your site.
Open Felling
Used where there's enough clear space to fell a tree in one controlled direction, away from anything it could damage. The quickest and most cost-effective method, when the site allows it.
Sectional Dismantling
For trees in tight gardens or close to buildings, fences, or power lines. We climb and remove the tree piece by piece, lowering each section by rope so nothing is ever dropped.
Emergency Felling
For storm-damaged, split or structurally failed trees that have become an immediate danger. Available 24/7 — call us any time, day or night.
When removal is
the right call
Felling is usually a last resort, not a first one — if a tree can be safely managed with a reduction, thin, or some dead-wooding instead, we'll always say so. But sometimes removal really is the only sensible option:

Do I need permission to fell a tree?
Sometimes. Trees within a conservation area, or covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), usually need council permission before felling can go ahead. We check this for you as part of the free site visit and handle the paperwork if it's needed.
Will you remove the stump as well?
We can, as a separate part of the job. Felling removes the trunk and canopy, but the stump and root system stay in the ground unless it's ground out too. We offer stump grinding alongside felling, or on its own if you'd rather deal with it later.
What happens to the wood?
Whatever suits you — we can leave logs stacked for firewood, chip the brash on site, or remove everything and dispose of it responsibly. We'll agree it with you before the job starts.
Can you fell a tree close to my house or power lines?
Yes — that's what sectional dismantling is for. Rather than felling the tree in one piece, we climb it and remove it section by section, lowering each piece by rope so nothing is ever dropped near buildings, fences or overhead lines.
How much does tree felling cost?
